Bison in the Pyreneees?
yes, although when we think in Bison we imagine them in the big grasslands from the American West, certainly we have a lot of facts that show their existence in the Iberian peninsula. In cave paintings like the Altamira’s Caves paintings, our ancestors painted this great mammal, and some excavations of fossils like Atapuerca, show their presence too.
In Europe, the location of Bison in freedom is more recent that in Spain. They know their hunting in Transilvania from the seventeenth century.There were only two wildlife reserves: one in Bialowieza, between Polonia y Rusiaand other in the Western Caucasus.
Fortunately, the Bison lived in parks and zoos they could introduce them in Bialowieza again, where they live free.
Breaking with the image of American Bison’s herds crossing endless grasslands, the European Bison prefers deep forest mixed with grasslands to live, their area in the Park Lacuniacha is so. This habitat gives grass, woody food and a shelter to them.
